EXPERTS SAY…. LOTS OF DEER OUT THERE!
Deer hunting season opens at sunrise Saturday, and area experts say it looks like there are a lot of deer in the woods.
It seems to be unanimous that deer season is going to be excellent!
There are reports of a lot of nice bucks of decent size, and the deer are are more numerous than they have been in recent years, according to a local gun shop owner.
Local shops are sporting photos and one has a shot of six deer ranging in size from 130 to 180 pounds with racks going from six points to 10 points. Opening day of Bow season brought a local man a 14 point buck at over 225lbs in South New Berlin. Bow season has seen a few more deer taken than normal.
“People are seeing all sorts of stuff,” Jim Losie of Losie’s Gun Shop in Oneonta added. “There are some nice racks this year, and the hunters have done pretty good during bow season.”
Losie said the hunter’s are getting excited. “This is like a holiday each year,” Losie said. New York’s deer and bear populations are a great resource for the state and hunting is an important part of New York’s heritage.
Regular bear hunting season in the southeastern portion of the southern bear range also begins on Saturday. The big game hunting season closes at sunseet Dec. 12.
Following the regular deer and bear seasons in the Southern Zone, late bowhunting and muzzleloading seasons will open at sunrise Dec. 13 and close at sunset Dec. 21. Hunters taking part in these special seasons must possess either bowhunting or muzzleloading privileges.
WIth NY State charging higher rates for non-resident licenses, the concensus is that the numbr of licenses are down and that means a lot less hunters out there this year!
Hunters should be aware of several important programs and recent changes as they prepare for the 2010 regular hunting season:. Check DEC’s website for new regulations!
Although safety-conscious hunters have significantly reduced the number of firearms-related injuries, according to the DEC studies show that individuals wearing hunter orange clothing are seven times less likely to be injured than hunters who do not wear the bright fluorescent color. STAY SAFE!
