The Local Landowners Associations have been lining up natural-gas drilling leases and it is going to change the way we look at our county when they come in.
OCCA (Otsego County Conservation Association) and the Otsego County Planning Department has been preparing an update to the county gas lease parcel map which should be posted online later this week. The new map shows a significant jump in the number of leases filed with the county. So far 71,564 natural gas leases are on file compared to 59,441 a year ago. Leases are primarily n the Butternut Valley area and they are coming in fast and furious at a time of accelerated activity in the gas drilling arena.
Gastem, out of Montreal Canada, has been vertically frilling on Crumhorn Mountain in Maryland for some time and has recently been given a permit to hydrofrack. They also plan to start drlling operations at a site in Irish Hollow, Cherry Valley.
Gastem has also been conducting seismic testing to identify natural gas deposits in Middlefield.
